This is a professional development programme that will prepare you to make quick and effective decisions when managing complex sustainability issues at your events.
Programme content is broken down into simple, implementable steps.
At the end of each module you'll be ready to take immediate action, keeping the boss, sponsors and event attendees happy and satisfied, by delivering a beautifully-produced event that is good for all.
Has your boss suddenly realised they need to be producing sustainable events, and as the 'greenie' in the building, you've been assigned the responsibility to 'make us sustainable'? They've probably already leap-frogged the 'doing' and are asking for certification...!!
But given no time to get ready, they still expect it to be done yesterday, they've given you no budget, no people, and no support.... what to do?
You might have a good gut feeling on what you need to do, but are overwhelmed when you think about how to begin. Where to start first - what to prioritise?
Energy, water, waste, single-use plastic, greenhouse gas emissions, transport, reusable cup systems, signage and overlay, food, food waste, composting, recycling, glitter, balloons, confetti, fireworks.... omg.
To compound this, with the world waking up too, your sponsors and performers are requiring you to have a sustainability plan, and your event attendees are probably asking (or we promise you are about to be asked) for carbon-neutral and plastic-free events.
These motivated (or newly awakened) people will be asking tricky questions about the event's sustainability agenda, water refill points, organic food, recycling, carbon emissions, plastic footprint and more. Get ready for pointing fingers, many questions, and the firing off of social media posts and shaming photos.
Not to freak you out further, but if you hadn't realised already, there are a huge number of people that you're going to have to get onboard - fellow staff, contractors, caterers, waste staff, venue management, performers, volunteers.... This is a people problem more than anything.
Once you're signed up, you'll get immediate, lifetime access to the course materials which includes videos from our instructors, downloadable assets, knowledge checks, further reading, and specially curated content from world-class events with case studies, videos and photos.
The course content is self-paced, and we will release the content throughout 2020. See the release schedule below.
You will be given ongoing access to the course materials and you are encouraged to treat it as a resource, to refer back to when you're ready to tackle a certain issue at your event.
In completing this course you will be armed with the knowledge you need to produce plastic-free, climate-responsible, restorative, fair and friendly events.
You can dip in and out of the content whenever you wish. There is no expiry date for access, and you can use it as a supportive brains trust. No matter what level you're at you can find the perfect advice and inspiration in this course.

We need to convince our brands
I am desperate to change the way we do things with the brands we work with. This course will give me the tools I need to convince our clients that a sustainable approach is the right approach.
It's opened my eye to how easy it can be.
This was an excellent course with great theory backed up by practical examples. It has opened my eyes as to how easy and inexpensive it is to run events in a sustainable manner and has helped to change our practices in not only our events planning but how we look at our everyday business
Before delving into the practical matters of applying sustainability principals to your event production, we recap on what sustainability represents. This module expands into related concepts of sustainable development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Launching during 2020.
Creating a thoughtful, fit-for-purpose strategic approach will avoid reactionary or once-off issues management, and will position your event to fully capitalise on meaningful opportunities in operational, outreach and leadership. You will develop the principles and values that you want to stand by, articulate what really matters to you and your stakeholders, including what is to be incorporated into your sustainability approach. Launching during 2020.
For decades, the event industry has been responsible for generating huge volumes of wasted resources sent to landfill. By the end of this module you'll be armed with the knowledge and tools to have your next event moving towards (maybe even reaching) zero waste.
FIRST MODULE TO BE RELEASED: Commences March 2020
Sustainable event energy management is about conserving energy demand, operating as efficiently as you can, sourcing the maximum renewable energy possible, and ultimately, reducing your greenhouse gas emissions related. By the end of this module you'll know how to design-in efficiency, embed smart power planning and why collecting, analysing and reporting on energy impacts is critical to your event success. Launching during 2020.
Moving people, supplies, equipment, temporary infrastructure and even waste and waste water, are major production logistics for many events. This Module presents issues and potential impacts of event travel and transport, and focuses on why efficiencies in this area will have direct benefit in other event activities. Launching during 2020.
A mountain of ‘stuff’ is needed to run most events and the purchase decisions you make are public statements of your commitment to being fair, ethical and environmentally responsible. This module unpacks key purchasing categories, sustainability issues, and will give you tools to make the best sourcing decisions. Launching during 2020.
Responsible water use and wastewater management play an important role in many event’s sustainability agendas. Where water scarcity is an issue, events must not overdraw this most precious of natural resources. Paramount is protection of the natural environment and biodiversity it supports, within the immediate vicinity of the event site or venue. This module dives into how events can ensure they are responsible environmental stewards. Launching during 2020.
Events can be life-changing platforms for good. They can be fully immersive, with cultivated experiences that allow participants to form a deep understanding and connection to sustainability principles. The food they eat, the way they are transported, how they are entertained and the new ideas they are opened to. This is your opportunity to engage and inspire your participants, your workforce, contractors and supply chain. Launching during 2020.

Meegan is a seasoned event professional and pioneer in event sustainability practice. Taking the events she was working on as living labs, Meegan devised her own way of incorporating sustainability into her events work. Right from the start she recognised that bringing the sponsors, partners, suppliers and attendees on the journey was absolutely key. Her early work lead to a call to take on the role as the first dedicated full-time sustainability manager at major music festivals in the UK, where she got to bring her efforts to scale.
She realised that this valuable learning needed to be shared with others as so few people were considering a sustainable approach to event production. She made the decision to document her processes. She started with the 'model event' devised through her work at Peats Ridge Festival. She authored the Live Earth Green Event Guidelines too, an early leader in the field. She has also contributed to advancing industry knowledge through writing the UNEP Music and Environment Initiative Singing to a Greener Tune, and was a co-author of the research paper into festival travel impacts Jam Packed (Julie's Bicycle). All of this has culminated in writing the industry bible, her book Sustainable Event Management: A Practical Guide. First published in 2009, and now in its third edition, she draws on the lessons learned by hundreds of events over two decades and brings them to life in this new online training course.
Giving back to the industry, she is co-founder and chair of the industry guild Sustainable Event Alliance, and was on the global working groups for the development of ISO 20121 and the GRI Event Sector Supplement.
Through her consultancy in event sustainability, her work includes both strategic and practical advice. Credits include the early sustainability strategy for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and sustainability programme advisor to The Ocean Race. She is currently also advising an intergovernmental event and a global fashion week.... you can be sure that the advice given in this course covers sports, festivals, business and special events!
Having trained more than 1000 event professionals in a face to face format, with the recent surge of interest in getting this knowledge into the profession, through this online course she can reach more people all at once!
She wrote the book on the subject!
I found the programme jam-packed with practical advice in a way that was thoroughly enjoyable. Meegan Jones wrote the book on the subject - literally! I can't think who would know more Sustainable EventManagement. Regardless of what your role is in the biz you will learn an enormous amount plus have the opportunity to network and learn from other industry professionals.
Director of Sustainability
An inspirational reference
Meegan pulls together the leaders of this sometimes disparate field from around the world into one inspirational book. I have used it as a reference and guide for my own work since the first edition came out. In every student interview I do about our sustainability work, it is the first and only reference material I recommend to them.
University of Calgary
Essential reading for every student in event management
Sustainability is more than just green operations, and Meegan Jones makes it clear that it involves multiple stakeholders, a comprehensive vision, and detailed planning and evaluation systems. You need a guide to continuous improvement, and this book provides the tools.
Every few weeks Meegan will host a live Q&A session in the 'Private' Facebook Group. As a feature of the course only enrolled participants in the course (or one of the modules) are invited into the cohort.
These sessions will focus on a broad range lessons from within the course and provide our cohort with an opportunity to ask Meegan clarifying questions. All sessions will be recorded for you to access as many times as you need.
The live sessions aren't the only time to engage... the FB group is the go-to forum is where we build community. Come to learn but also come to share. Even though both Meegan and Lisa are moderators of the group, we expect that you will bring your own experiences and be willing to contribute to the collective.
The movement Sustainable Events can only be achieved when we come together to take structured, complimentary action. That's why cohort based delivery is important to us. You become part of a global community focused on the shared goals.

It was not our intention to offer refunds but... as this is a new programme we expect that some of our messaging may not be as tight as we'd like. In the case we attract someone who isn't 'right' for the course then it is appropriate we offer a money-back guarantee.
It is our assumption that, if you are choosing to engage in a programme of work created by sustainability specialists with extensive experience, it is because you have a defined professional need.
