The following are sustainability competencies all events professionals should hold to be armed with the skills needed to produce events for good.


We map our course content to these competencies so that you are sustainable-event-ready and will be successful in completing your competency assessment with the Sustainable Event Alliance. 

Sustainability

Understand environmental sustainability concepts within the context of event production including: resource utilisation; resource conservation; materials choice; releases to land air or water; emissions reduction. Understand economic sustainability within the context of event production including: local economy; direct and indirect economic impacts; innovation and legacy. Understand social sustainability concepts within the context of event production including: fairtrade and profit sharing; equity; role of labour standards; health and safety; social justice; local community; cultural; heritage and religious sensitivity.


Sustainable Development

Understand and apply the principles of sustainable development including inclusivity, transparency, stewardship and integrity. Understand and apply the Sustainable Development Goals.


Stakeholders and Engagement

Identifying and engaging event sustainability stakeholders. Understanding their needs and expectations. Inclusion and participation of these stakeholders. Techniques to communicate sustainability concepts, objectives and policies, including fostering participation. Using communications and demonstration to convey sustainability concepts.


Planning and strategy

Understand and identify event sustainability issues and how to prioritise them for action. Understand and identify the relevant legal and regulatory requirements which relate to sustainability issues and impacts. Awareness of best practice in the event industry internationally. Create an Event Sustainability Policy.


Community and society

Understand how to ensure community inclusion, and avoiding disruption to neighbourhood amenity of event planning and operations. Practices to ensure an inclusive event. Respecting and including first nation or traditional owners. Religious, cultural or heritage concerns.


Measurement and reporting

Understand how to measure performance against goals and targets. Setting performance indicators. Setting performance objectives and targets. Monitoring, measurement, analysis and reporting of performance. Understand role of legacy in event planning, policy and outcomes. The role of events to encourage innovation in supply chain and production solutions, and the economic legacy of such.

Resource recovery 

Understand and apply the concepts of towards zero waste and resource recovery. Identify the waste creation impacts of procurement and production planning choices. Waste reduction and prevention techniques. Optimal waste segregation onsite. Identifying and understanding waste segregation, collection and processing options locally and at the venue or used by the cleaning contractor. Engaging event attendees in resource recovery initiatives. At-event resource recovery operations and techniques. Measurement and reporting.


Destination and venue

Understand the influence of the destination and venues on sustainability outcomes for the event. Identify the destination’s sustainability credentials and potential for supporting sustainable event production. Assess venue sustainability credentials. Assess accommodation sustainability credentials.


Sustainable sourcing

Understand the various sustainability impacts and issues in the event supply chain (materials, products etc). Establish criteria to evaluate significance and relevance of sustainable sourcing issues. Create information for supplier tenders or other documentation about sustainability requirements. Make sustainable sourcing assessments. Create a Sustainable Sourcing Policy.


Energy

Understand energy sources, conservation, efficiency and event energy operations at events to have effective discussions with the venue or energy contractors on reducing impact. Innovative energy supply options for events. Climate impact of energy use. Engaging energy users in conservation and efficiency. Measurement and reporting.


Travel and transport

Understand the travel and transport requirements for events management and their impacts including greenhouse gas emissions, congestion, safety and localised pollution or trampling. Sustainable transport and travel options. How to reduce impacts. Engaging stakeholders and attendees. Measurement and reporting. 


Water and biodiversity

Understand and identify issues related to water use at events, including the effects on local water draw and availability. Water conservation techniques. Engaging water users. Protection waterways. Chemical use. Local site protection. Spills and incidents response planning and reporting. Supply chain and sourcing impacts on the environment and biodiversity. Measurement and reporting.
